Our Resources

BC Hydro's Ruskin Dam, British Columbia, Canada.

Powerex's portfolio of resources includes some of the most flexible and reliable sources of energy around. Included in the mix are:

BC Hydro System

Powerex has access to the flexibility of the BC Hydro hydroelectric system, allowing us to shape and deliver power to meet individual customers' needs.

BC Hydro has constructed a world-class integrated hydroelectric system of close to 11,500 MW of generating capacity - over 10,000 of which are hydroelectric. Hydro's backbone electric system is interconnected with the western US by two 500 kV transmission lines on the west coast between BC and Washington, one 230 kV line connecting BC and Washington on the east side, and a 500 KV line to the east, connecting BC with Alberta. Hydro's transmission interconnections give us access to markets across the Western Systems Coordinating Council region, east into the US mid-west and south as far as Mexico.

Canadian Entitlement Power

Powerex is responsible for marketing the highly reliable Canadian Entitlement power on behalf of the BC government.

The Canadian Entitlement is Canada's one half share of the additional power produced on the Columbia River in the western United States as a result of the Columbia River Treaty of 1961. For the first 30 years the Entitlement was sold to US entities, but it's now returning to BC. Entitlement power amounts to 1170 MW of capacity.

Customers have used the Entitlement to augment their higher capacity factor supplies, and as a reserve for those hours when demands are higher than expected. With the ability to schedule the energy a day ahead at any hour during the month (up to the agreed capacity), it has proven to be an ideal product to cope with "Arctic express" or heat wave conditions when temperatures are at extremes and consumption increases.
